The tower portion of the light station structure is still an active aid to navigation. As such, the Coast Guard is responsible for the actual beacon light and related mechanisms. The American Lighthouse Foundation (ALF), based in Rockland, Maine, and its local volunteer group, the Friends of Pemaquid Point Lighthouse (FPPL), are obligated to provide for upkeep to the tower as a condition of their license to use and maintain the tower. The Coast Guard issued that license to ALF on May 1, 2000.

The Fourth Order Fresnel lens makes the beacon visible up to 14 nautical miles to sea.
